Downer Ave, 'Buddy Beek' Beeckler

Postby cgodfrey » Sat Jan 30, 2010 2:00 am

I know this is a bit esoteric, but indulge me for a moment

The house my wife and I moved into last winter was previously owned by Leroy "Buddy Beek" Beeckler. (We bought the house through his children, Mrs Beeckler is in frail health and had been moved to assisted living)

Does his name ring a bell with anyone? He seems to have been well known locally as a Jazz and Polka musician (The Buddy Beek Orchestra) and restaurateur to earn a more-prominent-than-average blurb in the obituaries when he died in 2004.

I've read that his club was on the lower end of Downer. Anyone have any pictures? Downer seems really underrepresented in the various online photo archives.

Thanks

In doing some online archive searching through Google I found the supper club as at 2575 N Downer Ave. Nothing about his orchestra. I personally had never heard of him, but did find this interesting article since I recall riding my bike past this place a lot when I was a kid.
