Building History Detail
War Memorial

A three story modern building built of reinforced concrete and designed by internationally renowned Finnish architect, Eero Saarinen. The structure stood on reinforced columns with the bulk of the upper stories cantilevered off this smaller structure. The mosaic was designed by Wisconsin artist, Edwin Lewandowski and depicted the years of World War II and the Korean War. A 1975 addition to the east added a large and almost hidden exhibition space for the Art Museum. Time Magazine considered it as, "...one of the country's finest examples of modern architecture put to work for civic purposes."
